Torii Kiyonaga was born in 1752 in Uraga, Japan, and received tutelage under Torii Kiyomitsu. Following his master's passing, Kiyonaga was adopted into the Torii family, continuing the family's legacy in print- and bookmaking, and actively participating in Japanese painting.

Recognized as a major painter and ukiyo-e designer before 1790, his works embraced popular late 18th-century themes such as bijin-ga, actors, shunga, and genre scenes. However, he is most acclaimed for his bijin prints, often considered a precursor to Utamaro Kitagawa.
